No, it is not normal for a power strip to make noises. Noises such as humming, crackling, humming or cracking indicate a possible problem and should be taken seriously.
Possible causes and what they mean:
Smouldering noises / crackling
→ Dangerous! May indicate loose contacts, defective components or overheating. Fire hazard!
Humming or buzzing
→ May be caused by an integrated overvoltage protection or switching power supply (e.g. for devices with a transformer or power supply unit), but: If the humming comes from the strip itself (not from the connected device), this is not normal.
It may indicate poor workmanship, coil beeping or a defect.
Cracking when switching on or off
→ A slight cracking sound when switching the switch is sometimes normal - but a permanent cracking sound is not.
Multiple socket outlets with USB module
The audible buzzing or whirring of USB charging power strips is usually caused by the integrated switching power supply transformer and the power electronics.
What you should do:
Disconnect the power strip from the mains immediately if you notice crackling, a smoldering smell or heat.
Check for visible damage (cracks, discoloration, wobbly sockets, scorch marks).
If it is already very old → better replace it.
Do not overload: Pay attention to how many appliances are connected - especially energy-intensive appliances (fan heater, microwave, etc.).
